For those of us in the music business in the 1970's, it was a time of incredible cultural changes that had a lasting effect on all of us...whether we were writers, marketers, publicists, artists or somewhere in-between. Most of all? It was a lot of fun.
The purpose of this website is to reflect some of those many adventures and changes as seen by photographs chronicling events, parties and people during that era. By necessity, we are highlighting the scenes we knew best...Southern California's vibrant music industry. But it goes further than that. We also endeavor to catch up with some of our friends and peers from back in the day, as they apply lessons learned to the world of the 21st Century.
Many of these photos were from my own files during my almost five-year tenure as Director of Public Relations, Advertising and Merchandising at Atlantic's West Coast office (Late 1971-early 1976). But it's not just from Atlantic. This site will feature photos from all of the record labels who had a presence (or touring artists) on the West Coast during that time period. Since there was no digital, photo-related meta-data in those days, some of the dates attributed to specific events are (at best) estimates. I welcome any updated, more accurate information. Based on demand from some of my contemporaries, I've also included a brief section that includes photos taken from the 1980's and beyond. The subjects in these photos are mostly my contemporaries in the music business at that time...specialists in PR, Marketing, Artist Relations, Promotion, Advertising and more. In some cases, the photos also include some of our recording artists with record company personnel.
Additionally, to set the tone for this time period, I've also included cross-cultural listings/photos of the more popular restaurants, publications, record labels, concert halls and clubs, rock television shows, record stores and more that were particularly popular amongst those of us in the music industry. Please let me know if I missed any key inclusions in those categories.
There is also an ever-growing section on the site entitled "Do You Remember These People", which provides a name and (when available) a head shot of the respective people. This has quickly become my favorite portion of the site. These people are drawn from all areas of the music business in the 1970s, from record companies to radio stations to record stores, publications, managers, booking agents, radio stations, super-enthusiastic fans (aka groupies), agents, promoters and more. If there is someone who should be in this index, please shoot me an email (use the Contact Form on the Contact Page of this site) asap and I'll do my best to add that person. Send any photos you'd like to contribute to my email address for this site (not the Contact Form) via: [email protected]. Thanks.
To check-out specific events, simply click on the "Table of Contents" tab at the top of each page and then double click on the event icon that interests you. That will bring you to the page(s) of photos for that specific event. The selection of events is somewhat limited now but we are receiving new new photos almost every day. Please send any you have directly to me ([email protected]).
And if you want to search for a particular individual or event, simply enter that name into the Search Box that appears on the home page (near the bottom), at the top of the Table of Contents page and at the bottom (footer area) of every page.
Obviously, this website is not comprehensive in content and only includes a small sampling of the parties and events that took place during the 1970s in SoCal. But we will continue to add new content and features to the site. Your help is essential. Send us your photos and your memories. Help us identify people in the photos that are already on the site. Provide us with your inspiration and your memories. Although this is a one-man, self-funded operation, I will do my best to respond to communications (email is preferred) on a timely basis.
And finally, thank you to all of the photographers who snapped photos that appear on this site. Although it's pretty much impossible to positively match individual photos with specific photographers (especially after 45+ years in some cases), I believe that such extraordinary photographers and collectors as Andy Kent, Neal Preston, Sam Emerson, Tony Lowe, Neil Zlozower, Brad Elterman, Robert Landau, Todd Gray, Richard Creamer, James Fortune, Bruce Talamon, and Lester Cohen may be represented herein. Also, thank you to those of you who have contributed photos (from your personal collections) and/or names/ideas to me for the site, including Spence Berland, Phil Savenick, Renee Pappas, Kathy Acquaviva, Barry Freeman, Ndu Comas, Bill Yaryan, Rob Gold, Lydia Woltag, Maureen Donaldson, Michael Ochs, Todd Everett, Jeff March, Sepp Donahower, Abe Hoch and many more.
NOTE: This website was created for purely entertainment and educational purposes, aimed directly at a very small segment of us who were actively involved in the music industry on the West Coast in the 1970s. My intent is (and always has been via this site) to bring a memory and hopefully a smile or two to your faces as you view photos of yourself, your friends and your colleagues from those bygone (and never to be recaptured) days. This is strictly a non-profit, non-commercial labor of love archive website. Nothing is for sale on the site and we urge you to respect the copyright ownership of any photographers whose work may be included. There are literally thousands of photos on the site, all used for strictly historical, archival purposes. We have made every effort to contact photo copyright holders when they are identified. If you are a rights holder to any of the photos on this website and feel strongly about them not being displayed on this type of forum, please contact me at your earliest possible convenience and I will immediately respond to you and take down your photos.
